Cloth Diapering Dictionary

Definitions

AIO All In One - a diaper that has an absorbent layer and a waterproof layer. They resemble a disposable - elastic legs and back (sometimes front), stays on with hook and loop or snaps.
AI2 All In Two - Similar to an AIO, but the absorbent layer is removable, dries faster this way.
CD Cloth diaper
UBCPF Unbleached Chinese Prefold. You may see IPF, meaning Indian prefold, or other abbreviations referring to the type/brand of prefold.
DSQ Diaper Service Quality - Refers to higher quality prefolds. These are the kind you want for cloth diapering. The lesser quality ones are commonly used as burp rags.
Fitted These diapers look like a disposable - elastic legs and back (sometimes front), they stay on with hook and loop or snaps, and have an absorbent layer. They do not have a waterproof layer.
Snappi An alternative to pins, this device looks like a Y with claws at each point. It holds a prefold on the baby.
Prefold (PF) A rectangular shaped diaper, this is what most people think of when they think Cloth Diapering. The cheapest way to use cloth, these can be folded a vairety of ways to fit baby. These have more layers down the center than the 2 sides.
Cover The waterproof layer necessary to protect clothing, etc. when baby is wearing a fitted or prefold. Many are made with laminated polyester fabric (PUL), Wool, or other waterproof fabrics. Many families don't use covers while at home, so they can tell right away when baby is wet.
Doubler A absorbent layer that can be laid in the diaper when extra absorbency is needed, such as overnight.
Flat Similar to a prefold, but the same amount of layers throughout.
Pockets These have a waterproof outer layer and a stay-dry inner layer, with an opening at the back to insert the absorbent layer (insert). Since the absorbent layer is removeable, they dry faster and can be customized to your needs. Some fitteds now come as pockets, these would not have a waterproof outer layer but would dry much faster than regular fitteds.
Envelopes Similar to a pocket, but the opening is not placed on the back edge. The opening is inside a few inches from an edge, or outside a few inches from an edge. Many of these are easier to use as the inserts often fall out by themselves in the washing machine.
Soaker This refers to either the absorbent layers in a diaper (such as the snap in part of an AI2), or it refers to a wool cover since wool does absorb some wetness, but still prevents clothing from becoming soaked.
PUL Polyurethane Laminate. This is the most common type of waterproofing used in cloth diapers. The laminate is heat sealed to the fabric, usually a 100% polyester knit. Sometimes it's sealed to a cotton woven and this tends to wick more and break down the fabric faster, though it is usually a super cute print.
FOE Fold Over Elastic. This is an elastic binding that is commonly used around the edges of cloth diapers, especially covers.
Many times you'll see things like FB (Fuzzi Bunz), BSWW(Bummis Super Whisper Wraps), HH(Happy Heinys), etc. These refer to certain brands of cloth diapering products. When in doubt, ask!
Insert The stuffable part of a pocket or envelope diaper. Prefolds and microfiber towels are commonly used inserts. Many pocket diaper makers sell inserts customized to fit their brand.
Wool Shorties, Longies, and Skirties refer to a wool cover designed to look like an article of clothing.
